Michael Peters is the President Emeritus of St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he served as president from 2005 to 2016.
Prior to his time at St. John’s he was the Executive Vice President of the Council on Foreign Relations, a not-for-profit, membership organization and foreign policy think tank based in New York City. As EVP at the Council on Foreign Relations he served as COO, overseeing the Council’s daily operations as well as leading its work nationally. For a period during his tenure he also directed the Council’s research arm.
Having graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Mr. Peters served over twenty years in the US Army, retiring with the rank of colonel. He taught on the West Point faculty and held a senior administrative position at the Academy. Other highlights of his military career include duty in Vietnam, service as an attaché at the US Embassy in Moscow, command of troops during operations in Panama and Saudi Arabia and holding several high-level staff positions at the Pentagon.
